WELCOME LETTER from Principal Heidi Fedore
August, 2010

Hello Newport Parents and Guardians,

We’re just days away from August 30th, the first day of school and we look forward to having our students back at Newport.

As you know, we’ve already been gearing up for the opening of school. Thank you to the parent volunteers and staff members who organized and assisted with the Back to School days. We were able to process approximately 1400 students through 8 stations. If you or your student were not able to make it through this process, please be sure ask your student to:
1. Turn in his or her packet, including the student profile, to the main office,
2. Pay class and activities fees before or after school, or during lunch, at the accounting office,
3. Arrange for lockers and/or bus passes during lunch in front of the main office, and
4. Take his or her picture on Picture Make-up Day, Sept. 8th

First Day
All students need to pick up their up-to-date schedules when they arrive in order to be admitted to class. Students go to the following locations:
9th: Commons near the kitchen
10th and 11th: Outside Gym
12th: Commons near the student store

Welcome Freshmen
Freshmen were greeted with enthusiastic applause and cheers at their orientation and as they arrived at the freshman dance on Friday, August 20th. During the orientation, the LINK leaders were spirited, organized and team players as they led students through building tours as well as through activities for getting to know peers better. The freshmen are off to a great start thanks to the LINK leaders and LINK advisors, Mr. Nonis and Ms. Primrose.

So far, so good
After three busy weeks as the new principal at Newport, it is clear that leading this school is an ideal fit for my experience and background. I look forward to serving this school and community this year. So far, the staff, students and parents that I’ve met have been friendly and optimistic. For example, I was impressed with Band Booster parents’ willingness to volunteer to assist with our band teacher interviews, with parents’ generosity as freshmen dance chaperones and with PTSA President Eric Dawes’ assistance.

Mark your calendars for...
Disco Dance, September 3rd, from 9-midnight. While we want students to have fun, we’re working on curbing the Freak Dancing, rationalizing with students that if their parents were at the dance, students would dance more respectfully. Please help us reinforce appropriate dance behavior with students.

Open House will take place on Thursday, September 23rd. Grade-level meetings start at 6:15 p.m., although people tend to arrive earlier to mingle in the Commons where informational tables are located. At 7 p.m., parents will be in their student’s first period class and progress from there. We look forward to seeing you.

Making Connections
Newport’s PTSA and school target this year is making connections: both with relevant lessons and with improving relationships.

During the first week of school, teachers review their syllabi and student handbook. We know you’re incredibly busy, but, to ensure success, please take a moment to review these documents with your student so that school and teacher expectations are clear.

Sincerely,

Heidi Fedore
Principal

Welcome, Heidi Fedore & Dusty Steere
Early in the summer, Principal Bethany Spinler accepted another position with the school district to develop programs for the Alternative High School (Robinswood) while the school is being "retooled". A search began to find a replacement.

On Sunday, August 8th ... the District announced a candidate they are recommending to the Board for approval. Heidi Fedore, Asst. Principal at Skyline in Issaquah (for the past six years), is joining our school. More information will be forthcoming as the position is finalized by the School Board.

This year we also welcome Dusty Steere, most recently @ Tyee Middle School. Dusty replaces Aaron Miller as Asst. Principal.
